What to Expect: A Step-by-Step Media Wall Installation Guide

Wondering what happens during a media wall installation? Our step-by-step guide explains the entire process from your first showroom visit to enjoying your finished feature wall.

Understanding the Media Wall Installation Process

If you're considering a bespoke media wall for your home, you probably have questions about the installation process. How long does it take? What preparation is needed? What happens on the day?

At West Lothian Feature Walls, we've refined our installation process over 200+ projects across Scotland. This guide walks you through every stage so you know exactly what to expect.

    Stage 1: The Showroom Visit

Your media wall journey begins at our showroom in Livingston. Located at 22C Carmondean Centre South (EH54 8TD), our showroom features multiple display media walls that showcase different designs, materials, and finishes.

    What to Bring

When visiting the showroom, it helps to bring:

    • Room photos: Pictures of the wall and room where the media wall will go
    • Rough measurements: An approximate width and height of the available wall space
    • Inspiration images: Screenshots from Instagram, Pinterest, or other media walls you've seen and liked
    • Budget ideas: A general idea of what you'd like to invest — see our pricing guide

    What Happens During the Visit

    Our design team will:

    • Walk you through our display media walls
    • Show you the full range of materials, finishes, and colours
    • Demonstrate our electric fireplace options
    • Discuss your ideas, preferences, and requirements
    • Provide initial guidance on pricing based on your requirements

Showroom visits typically last 30-60 minutes, though you're welcome to spend as long as you like. There's absolutely no obligation, and we never pressure clients into making decisions on the spot.

    Stage 2: Design Development

Following your showroom visit, our design team begins developing your media wall concept. This involves:

    Layout Design

Based on your requirements and the information gathered during the showroom visit, we create a layout for your media wall. This includes the position of the TV, fireplace, storage elements, and any other features. For tips on choosing the right design, read our design guide.

    Material Selection

The materials and finishes you chose at the showroom are confirmed and specified in detail. If you'd like to see additional samples or are undecided between options, we're happy to provide further materials for consideration.

    Initial Quotation

You'll receive an initial quotation based on the design concept. This gives you a clear understanding of the investment required before proceeding further.

    Stage 3: The Site Survey

Once you're happy with the design concept and indicative pricing, we schedule a site survey at your home. The site survey costs just £50, which is fully deducted from your final quote if you proceed.

    What Happens During the Survey

    Our surveyor will:

    • Take precise measurements of the wall and room (to the millimetre)
    • Assess the existing wall condition and construction
    • Check the electrical supply and identify any additional electrical work needed
    • Discuss the installation logistics (access, parking, dust protection)
    • Confirm the design is feasible and identify any modifications needed
    • Take photographs for reference during manufacturing

    How Long Does It Take?

A typical site survey takes 30-45 minutes. We work around your schedule and can usually accommodate specific time requests. We cover all of Scotland, including Glasgow, Edinburgh, Stirling, and Falkirk.

Stage 4: Final Design and Approval

Following the site survey, we finalise your design and produce a detailed quotation. This includes:

    • Complete specification of all materials and finishes
    • Fireplace model and size
    • All storage and shelving elements
    • LED lighting specification
    • Electrical work requirements
    • Total project cost with no hidden extras

    Your Approval

You review the final design and quotation. This is your opportunity to make any last adjustments before manufacturing begins. We want you to be completely confident in every detail before proceeding.

Once approved, you pay a 50% deposit (by bank transfer or card), and your media wall enters production.

    Stage 5: Manufacturing

Your bespoke media wall is manufactured to your exact specifications. This typically takes 2-4 weeks depending on complexity, material availability, and our current workload.

    During manufacturing, we'll:

    • Confirm your installation date
    • Coordinate any pre-installation electrical work
    • Prepare all components for a smooth installation day

    Pre-Installation Preparation

If electrical work is required before the media wall installation (such as adding sockets or running new cables), this is typically completed a few days before the main installation day.

    Stage 6: Installation Day

This is the exciting part — the day your bespoke media wall becomes a reality.

    Morning Arrival

Our installation team arrives at your home in the morning, typically between 8:00 and 9:00 AM. The team consists of experienced installers who have completed hundreds of media wall installations.

    Protection and Preparation

Before any work begins, we protect your floors, furniture, and surrounding areas with dust sheets and protective coverings. We take great care to minimise any impact on the rest of your home.

    Construction Phase

The installation process follows a carefully planned sequence:

    1. Framework: A timber framework is constructed against the wall, creating the structural foundation for the media wall
    2. Electrical: All electrical connections are made within the framework — sockets, lighting circuits, and fireplace connections
    3. Panels: The bespoke panels are fitted to the framework, creating the visible surfaces of the media wall
    4. Fireplace: The electric fireplace is installed and connected
    5. Storage: Cupboards, shelving, and other storage elements are fitted
    6. Lighting: LED lighting is installed and connected
    7. TV Mounting: Your TV bracket is fitted (if not wall-mounted separately)

    Quality Check

Once the installation is complete, our team conducts a thorough quality check, ensuring every panel is perfectly aligned, every door opens smoothly, and all electrical connections function correctly.

    Final Clean

We don't leave until your room is spotless. All packaging, offcuts, and dust are removed, and your living room is left in pristine condition.

    Handover

The final step is a walkthrough with you. We demonstrate the fireplace controls, lighting system, and any other features, ensuring you're completely familiar with your new media wall.

At this point, we'll ask for your sign-off confirming you're happy with the installation. This sign-off generates the final 50% invoice for immediate payment.

    After Installation

    Guarantees

All our media wall installations come with guarantees covering both the structure and the electrical work. Specific guarantee periods vary depending on the specification but range from 2 to 5 years. Read more about maintaining your media wall to keep it looking perfect.

    Aftercare

If you ever have any questions or concerns after installation, we're always available. Whether it's advice on cleaning, help with the fireplace controls, or any other query, our team is just a phone call away.

    Frequently Asked Questions About Installation

How long does installation take? Most media wall installations are completed in a single day. More complex installations may extend to two days.

Do I need to move my furniture? We ask that the wall area is clear before our arrival. Moving sofas back from the wall is usually sufficient.

Will there be much dust? We minimise dust through careful working practices and protective coverings. Some dust is inevitable with any construction work, but we clean thoroughly at the end.

Can I stay in the house during installation? Absolutely. Most of our clients carry on with their day while we work. We'll keep disruption to a minimum.

Do I need planning permission? In the vast majority of cases, no. Read our complete guide to planning permission for media walls for full details.
