Keeping Your Media Wall Looking Perfect
Your bespoke media wall from West Lothian Feature Walls is built to last, using premium materials and expert craftsmanship. But like any quality investment, proper care and maintenance will ensure it remains a stunning centrepiece of your home for many years to come.
The good news is that maintaining a media wall is straightforward and requires minimal effort. In this guide, we'll cover everything you need to know about cleaning and caring for your bespoke feature wall.
Regular Cleaning: The Basics
Panel Surfaces
The panels that form the visible surface of your media wall are your primary maintenance focus. How you clean them depends on the finish:
Matt Laminate Panels Matt finishes are the most forgiving and easiest to maintain. Dust regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth. For marks or fingerprints, use a slightly damp microfibre cloth with a small amount of mild household cleaner. Avoid abrasive cleaners or scourers, which can damage the matt surface.
Gloss Laminate Panels Gloss finishes show fingerprints and dust more readily but are equally easy to clean. Use a microfibre cloth with a standard glass cleaner for a streak-free finish. Buff dry with a clean, dry cloth for the best results.
Timber-Effect Panels Clean with a soft, dry cloth or slightly damp microfibre. Avoid excessive moisture, which can affect the finish over time. A specialist wood-effect furniture spray can add extra lustre.
Stone-Effect Panels Dust with a soft brush or dry cloth. For more thorough cleaning, use a damp cloth with mild soap. The textured surface of stone-effect panels naturally conceals minor dust and marks.
How Often to Clean
For most households, a weekly dust with a dry microfibre cloth is sufficient. More thorough cleaning with a damp cloth can be done monthly or as needed. Households with children or pets may need to clean more frequently — see our family media wall guide for tips.
Electric Fireplace Maintenance
Glass Front
The glass front of your electric fireplace should be cleaned regularly to maintain the best visual effect. Use a standard glass cleaner and a soft cloth, cleaning the exterior surface only. The interior is sealed and doesn't require user maintenance.
Ember Bed and Internal Components
The internal components of Evonic electric fireplaces are designed to be maintenance-free. The LED technology used for flame effects has an extremely long lifespan and doesn't require bulb replacement.
If you notice any change in the flame effect or unusual behaviour, contact us on 01506 365770 and we'll advise on the appropriate action.
Ventilation
Electric fireplaces have small ventilation openings that allow air circulation for the heating element. Ensure these are kept clear and unobstructed. A gentle vacuum around the ventilation area every few months prevents dust accumulation.
LED Lighting Care
LED lighting requires virtually no maintenance. The LEDs have an expected lifespan of 50,000+ hours, meaning they'll likely last longer than any other component of your media wall.
If an LED strip fails (extremely rare), replacement is straightforward and can be carried out during a service visit.
Controller and Remote
Keep your lighting controller or remote in a convenient location and replace batteries as needed. If you're using a smartphone app for control, ensure it's kept updated for the best performance.
Storage Elements
Push-to-Open Mechanisms
The push-to-open mechanisms on cupboard doors are designed for thousands of operations. However, they work best when used correctly — press firmly and centrally to open, and close with a firm push until you feel the catch engage.
If a mechanism becomes stiff or unresponsive, a small amount of silicone spray on the moving parts usually resolves the issue. Contact us if problems persist.
Shelving
Display shelves should be kept within their weight capacity. While our shelving is built to be robust, overloading with excessively heavy items can cause sagging over time. Distribute weight evenly across the shelf.
Drawers
Pull-out drawers operate on ball-bearing runners for smooth operation. These are maintenance-free under normal use. If a drawer becomes stiff, check that it's not being overloaded or that items aren't caught in the runner mechanism.
Seasonal Maintenance
Spring
A thorough clean at the start of spring is good practice. Wipe all surfaces, clean the fireplace glass, and check that all mechanisms are operating smoothly. This is also a good time to check LED lighting and replace any remote control batteries.
Autumn
Before the colder months (when you'll likely use the fireplace heating more), give the fireplace a thorough external clean and ensure ventilation openings are clear.
What to Avoid
To keep your media wall in the best condition, avoid:
- Harsh chemicals: Bleach, acetone, and abrasive cleaners can damage panel surfaces
- Excessive water: Never use a dripping wet cloth on any part of the media wall
- Abrasive materials: Scourers, steel wool, and rough cloths can scratch surfaces
- Direct heat sources: Don't place candles or other heat sources on or near panel surfaces
- Adhesives: Don't stick anything to panel surfaces — adhesive residue can be very difficult to remove
- Impact: While our panels are durable, they can chip or crack if struck with a hard object
